Today, I would like to welcome Claire Gem to sylv.net
What made you decide to write books?
I have always loved to write, to express myself on paper. I particularly love Gothic-style ghost stories, but those set in modern times. When I ran out of books to read, I decided it was time to start writing my own.
What was the inspiration for your books?
Each of my books is set in a place I have lived or spent a great deal of quality time. Something about these locations spoke to me. The stories grew out of these memories.
If you have a publisher, what has it been like working with them?
I have been published by three small publishers, with varying degrees of satisfaction. Early in 2016, I finally decided to go rogue and self-publish my first Haunted Voices novel. Hearts Unloched was a winner in the 2016 New York Book Festival.
What challenges did you face as you wrote this book?
The fire destroying Talcott Hall discouraged my muse. For months, I was lost. I felt as though more than the building burned–my story died with it. Finally, and with the help of a Middletown fireman who granted me the rights to use his fire photos in the promotion of this book, I was inspired to weave the fire into the story.
What do you like to read?
I love to read what I write: spooky, Gothic ghost stories set in modern times.
What advice would you give to those thinking about writing a book?
Find out as much as possible about your genre, as well as the publishing industry. I recently published an Author’s Resource guide, The Road to Publication, to help aspiring authors do just this. It is the book I wish I could have found a the beginning of my writing career.
