Felena is a long-time entrepreneur and marketing maven. Her latest venture, Hera Hub, is a spa-inspired shared workspace and community for female entrepreneurs. Hera Hub members have access to a professional space to meet with clients and to connect and collaborate with like-minded business owners, thus giving them the support they need to be prosperous. The company has three locations in San Diego, one in Washington DC, and continues to grow nationally via a licensing model. Her goal is to support over 20,000 women in the launch and growth of their business by 2020. Felena and Hera Hub have been featured in Inc Magazine, the BBC News, Forbes, and the New York Times. She is a published author and international speaker. Her book, “Flight Club – Rebel, Reinvent, and Thrive: How to Launch Your Dream Business” is available on Amazon.
When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?
I never saw myself as a writer. I’m a female entrepreneur, running multiple business, thus making time to write was challenging for me.
I made a failed attempt at writing a book in 2005, called “30 Reasons NOT to Marry before 30”… you can only guess why I initiated this project… a divorce. I quickly realized two things, 1. It’s easy to write, but it’s difficult to publish, and 2. I didn’t want my life/platform to be on the topic of divorce.
It wasn’t until I was a few years into running Hera Hub – spa-inspired workspace for women – that I took the time to tell my story.
Who do you admire?
I really like Sara Blakely, founder of Spanx, because of her determination. She had a job selling fax machines for seven years, when she discovered that, as a consumer, “there was a void between the traditional underwear and the heavy-duty girdle.” She cut the feet out of control-top pantyhose and made her own modifications to create Spanx. She was told no, by dozens of suppliers before finding one company that was willing to take a risk on her idea. All entrepreneurs can learn a lot from her story.
What are you most proud of / what brings you the most joy in your work?
I believe in what I am doing, I have witnessed the growth, innovation, and collaboration that comes from the Hera Hub community. I am most proud of the number of female entrepreneurs that we have been able to support. Our growth has enabled: the launch of three profitable locations within three years, a dynamic community with over 350 members, and to be home away from home to the incredible people that use our spaces. I am so proud of Hera Hub and the wonderful people that make it as special as it is.
The most fulfilling part of my job is, without a doubt, my member’s growth. If I succeed that means they do to. We are a community that supports the development of every member. I love seeing them develop and watching the birth of new business ideas or solve problems/make strategic business decisions because of collaboration. I hear EVERYday how they have grown, been supported, or are thriving because of the Hera Hub community and its resources. I love reading their names in reputable publications or seeing their businesses featured in blogs or watching their interviews on television, when they shine, I know I am doing great work.
Why did you decide to combine a message of inspiration with an actionable guide?
The book was my chance to be vulnerable and share my story. I’ve been told my many that my journey is inspiring – very much what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. I’m a very practical person and always want to add as much value as possible to any interaction. It was important to me to give the reader a clear path to finding their path and a set of concrete steps to execute that plan – otherwise it just felt incomplete. That final section, the action plan, is also backed-up with an interactive online platform – www.StepsToStartup.com – which walks you through 17 foundational steps of launching a business, including links to resources and videos. Book buyers will receive three months free access.
What would you like my readers to know?
My goal is to inspire women to exploring bringing their passions to life via entrepreneurship. Life is too short to stay in a job that doesn’t fulfill you. While launching a business isn’t easy, it is certainly the most rewarding thing I’ve ever done!
